Tonight is a big night in L’s personal dietary history, as she will graduate from rice cereal to food we grown-ups actually eat (the rice stuff is gross; I know because I tasted it). On the menu: Zucchini.

Not just any zucchini, mind you; organic zucchini. Why? Because her dad (that is, yours truly) has been geeking out all week about making her the healthiest food possible.

Making the food has been fun. A few weeks back, I wrote a post seeking suggestions about which device we should purchase to prepare L’s food. Thanks for all of your great input; we went with the Babycook from Beaba (via Williams-Sonoma). Yes, this device was outrageously spendy. Thankfully, we had a bunch of gift cards that defrayed the cost considerably.

Now, the fun part comes in predicting which different grown-up foods L will like. Powergirl and I are thinking zucchini might make the cut; pumpkin and potatoes, maybe not so much.

As this whole feeding thing gets more complicated, please feel free to share suggestions and recommendations for foods which your babies have enjoyed. If you’ve got any good recipes for all-natural baby foods, please share those as well.

Now that L is all about eating solid foods, I’m starting to think it might be healthier for her (and cheaper for us) if I make the stuff myself.

Along these lines, a good friend (and fellow new parent) recommended some food mills today, like this one from Bed, Bath & Beyond and this one from Buy Buy Baby. I had never heard of a food mill until this recommendation. So I ask you parents who’ve done this before: To what extent are they worthwhile?

And a follow-up: If we do go the food mill route, which foods best lend themselves to steaming and straining/pureeing in this fashion?

A second follow-up: Once I get really good at making baby food, I think I’d be a great contestant for Top Chef/Stay-at-Home Dads. Does such a show exist on the ABC Family channel?

Casting agents, you heard it here first.
