Daddy-tracked

Everybody who’s ever considered becoming a parent has heard horror stories about how mommyhood can derail a career for some women. A recent article (by a good friend) on ABCNews.com looked at how a growing number of men are being daddy-tracked, as well.

The story, which ran just before Father’s Day, was titled, “Daddy-Tracked: Men Punished at Work for Child Duties,” quoted a number of men who claim they were declined promotions and other opportunities at work because they prioritized their kids.

In one case, a professor from Houston complained about how, five years after scaling back hours from full-time to part-time to care for his infant son, he now is experiencing serious trouble finding full-time work again. In another case, a dad talks about how one of his former employers fired him because his developmentally disabled son’s doctor appointments required him to miss too much work.

The author’s conclusion, of course, is that businesses must stop “stereotyping fathers as first-career meal-tickets” and “recognize that that men can change a diaper and chaperone a carful of tweens to soccer practice, too.”

It’s a good read. Check it out.
