She’s official
The mailwoman delivered our 2010 Census forms today, and for the first time in L’s young life, she gets to stand up and be counted.
How odd (but awesome) it was to read the form and see that I now need to report three instead of two humans living here in this household. It’s like, all of a sudden, the fact that she’s ours has taken on additional significance.
Of course according to the numbers, our baby is technically in the minority. A recent report by a number of academic researchers indicated that, for the first time in history, babies born to minority parents outnumber white babies (in case you read this blog and have never seen a photo of me, both I and my wife are white).
To make sure its numbers on this new trend are accurate, the U.S. Census Bureau apparently is running public service announcements all month to improve its tally of young children, particularly minorities, who are most often missed in the once-a-decade head count.
That likely explains the letter they sent us last week, telling us the official census forms would be arriving in a few days.
Census folks: We don’t need these reminders. There are now three of us in this household, and we’re damn proud of it.
